The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
