Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
